Over a ten-year horizon the ranking is decided almost entirely by load volume: buying wins once you wash more than a few hundred loads a year, and renting loses at nearly every volume because its fee recurs for a machine that is never yours.

Buying and renting share the same running costs — water, power, detergent, repairs — so the whole difference between them is capital: a purchase is charged once per machine lifetime, a rental every year forever.
